A city man was jailed Tuesday night hours after he allegedly broke into another man's home and stole a small amount of marijuana, city police said.

Using a hatchet to break down a back door, Zachary Allen Cummings, 23, of 730 Locust St., forced his way into Anthony Sofranek's home at 826 Second St., about 4:30 p.m., police said.

Officers were dispatched there for a burglary in progress, but while en route, a caller told them the intruder fled the property in a Dodge Charger.

A vehicle matching the getaway car was spotted in the 800 block of West Third Street and pulled over, police said. Cummings was the driver.

Inside his pants pocket was a small amount of marijuana that he claimed to have stolen in the burglary, police said.

Following his arraignment before Gary A. Whiteman on charges of burglary, felony trespassing, possession of an instrument of crime, theft and receiving stolen property, Cummings was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail.
