MANSFIELD - Mansfield University and Mill Cove Inc. have been working together for several years in the development and use of the Mill Cove Environmental Area.
On Dec. 18, the two parties formalized their relationship with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.
Under the terms of the agreement, Mansfield and Mill Cove Inc. will work together to promote, publicize and use the Mill Cove Environmental Area as an ecological experiment station for teaching and research for MU students and faculty.

"This is significant because it formalizes what has been an informal relationship for our academic programs, especially in the Biology area, to use the Mill Cove Environmental Area for our students for different life experiences," Mansfield Interim President Allan Golden said. "It really augments in a very effective way what they do in the classroom. This is a very important for Mansfield in terms of our academic programs and the ability to use that Mill Cove area."
"This agreement will allow each of us to move forward with our goals for the area," Charlie Fox, president of the Mill Cove, Inc. Board of Directors, said. "We look at it as a building block to do more things with the university in the future.
"On behalf of everyone involved with Mill Cove, I would like to extend a special thank you to Aaron McNiven (associate professor and director of the MU Fisheries program) for his commitment to, and his leadership in assisting us in moving the Mill Cove project forward," Fox added.
The Mill Cove Environmental Area is 250 acres in Tioga County, north of Mansfield. The area is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers and leased by Mill Cove Inc., a nonprofit corporation formed to enhance the area for recreational and environmental education purposes.
