A team of two women face charges after allegedly stealing about $400 in merchandise from Kmart, at 1915 E. Third St., in Loyalsock Township, on Oct. 30.

Kristin Angelic Smith, 39, and Mariah Crystal Then, 21, both of 645 1/2 Grier St., were charged with one misdemeanor count of retail theft.

According to state police, Jamie Wagner, loss prevention officer for Kmart, witnessed Then and Wagner walk around the store and place several items into their purses. Both women exited the store without paying, according to court records.

Wagner stopped the pair outside in the parking lot and escorted them into the store, where they waited until police arrived.

According to police, Smith allegedly stole cleaning supplies, a Halloween cape, five sweaters, three pairs of pants, one sweatshirt, one vest and one shirt, totaling about $270.

Then allegedly stole hangers, makeup, candy, boots, earrings, a travel mug, hair color, several shirts and two pairs of leggings. Combined, the merchandise was worth about $160, according to court records.

Wagner told police that the items taken would not be able to be resold and the store would need to be reimbursed by the pair, if they are found guilty.

According to police, Smith explained that she and Then originally had come to the store to purchase Halloween items but admitted that she did hide several items in her purse, in an attempt to remove them from the store.

Smith waived her preliminary hearing before District Judge Gary Whiteman on Dec. 24. She is out on $2,500 bail.

Then did not attend her preliminary hearing.
