Rudy, Williams lead Lycoming to tournament title

December 30, 2012

Jerald Williams finished with 19 points and 14 assists and Michael Rudy set a single-game school record with six blocks as Lycoming defeated John Jay, 100-72, in the Louis Flemming Basinger Memorial Tournament championship game at Lamade Gym.

"Mike Rudy changed the game taking away John Jay's desire to drive to the basket. Jerald then was able to do what he does when John Jay got back on its heels," Lycoming coach Guy Rancourt said. "Both of them together were really the difference in the contest today."

The defense was intense for Lycoming.

Rudy was especially good at changing the direction of shots and keeping players out of the paint. His record-setting performance was set up by a 3-minute span in the second half in which he blocked four shots.

"The coach at Danville High School did a great favor to me," Rancourt said. "Having him play a guard and post position throughout his four years at Danville, he worked in both areas. He developed both guard and post abilities and that versatility that's showing now is really starting to pan out."

At 16:43 he denied Jamar Harry, then followed that up with a block on Kris Owens at 16:17. After two Gary Brady free throws, Rudy sent an Isaiah Holman shot away. The rampage ended at 13:54 when Rudy earned his fifth block of the game.

"The blocked shots is being in position and calling out to help with dribble penetration," Rudy said.

Rudy's defensive effort was part of a 13-0 run by Lycoming (11-1) to open the second half. And while Rudy was putting a show on at the defensive end, Williams was moving the offense.

"John Jay is a very good team," Rancourt said. "I believe we had the best player on the floor in Jerald Williams. We went into the game with that mindset, and Jerald showed what he can do."

The Basinger Tournament MVP posted four assists and two points over the early second-half run that helped Lycoming build a 21-point lead.

"I take every game as a challenge," Williams said. "I took (Sunday) more as a personal challenge. I know John Jay (6-3) likes to run and wanted to show my coaches I can run with the best in any conference."

After scoring the Warriors' first points of the half, Williams found Chris Foreman on three consecutive trips down the court. Foreman, who finished with 17 points and connected on five of seven 3-point attempts, scored the next eight points for Lycoming.

Williams and Foreman combined to score 22 of Lycoming's second-half points, with each chipping in 11. Those two players, along with Rudy, who finished with 12 points, highlighted a weekend in which Lycoming posted 203 points in two games.

"We've been preparing for this team," Rudy said. "We knew what they had, the same as us. They run the floor and are very athletic. We were prepared and ready for what they had to bring."

Freshman William Wingate, who's dunk against Messiah earned a top three finish in ESPN's Top 10 plays a couple weeks ago, posted a career-high 12 rebounds. Wingate also added seven points, two blocks and three assists.

"When you can have eight rebounds by halftime off the bench it's impressive," Rancourt said. "He brings a level of energy that we need to continue being successful this year."

Gallaudet defeated Cairn in the consolation game, 68-56. Layton Seeber scored 29 points and Orion Palmer added 17 points in the win.
