George J. Hurne, 90, of South Williamsport, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at The Gatehouse.
George was born Feb. 2, 1922, at Hornell, N.Y. He was the son of the late Otto and Lila L. (Swarthout) Hurne.
George was wedded to his loving wife, the late Mary Jane Noon for 61 years, and out of this love they nurtured six children.
George was a member of the Saint Lawrence Catholic Church and retired from 41 years of employment at Avco Lycoming. A veteran of World War II, George served his country with pride and honor overseas in the U.S. Navy. George was an active community servant dedicating 50 plus years of service to the First Ward Fire Co. of South Williamsport. He was also a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, the South Williamsport School District, and donated 12 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross blood bank. George was an active and energetic person who enjoyed fishing, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, bowling, riding his motorcycle and mountain bike, repairing small engines in his garage, roller skating and piloting small aircraft.
Surviving are his four children, Philip J. (LaVerna) Hurne of South Williamsport, Karen A. (David) Baier of Bastress Township, W. Brian Hurne of Watsontown, Patrick O. (Barbara) Hurne of Interlochen, Mich.; two daughters-in-law, Sandra K. Hurne and Susan Hurne; two brothers, Lyle (Thelma) Hurne of Mechanicsburg, Charles Hurne of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; and one sister, Helen (Fred) Atwood of Mechanicsburg. George is also survived by 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mary Jane, and his late parents he was preceded in death by two sons, David G. Hurne, Dennis F. Hurne; a sister, Betty Finney; and two sisters- in-law, Shirley Hurne and Joan Hurne.
The family would also like to extend their gratitude to Loretta Quiggle for her devoted care over the past five years and also to the staff of the Susquehanna Home Health Hospice.
Funeral services and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the Saint Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, 800 W. Central Ave., South Williamsport, Pa., with Father Paul C. Fontanella officiating. Interment will be private at Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport.
Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Charles M. Noll Funeral Home, South Williamsport.
