As a former superintendent of schools, I was appalled to read in a recent edition of the Sun-Gazette the remarks of Wayne LaPierre, chief lobbyist of the National Rifle Association, proposing that armed police officers be posted in every American school to stop shooting rampages such as occurred recently in Newtown, Connecticut.
He justified his proposal by saying, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
What in the world does he think a school house is, a modern version of the OK Corral in Tombstone, AZ, site of the famous shootout in 1881? I'll wager that such a mindset is not shared by most of NRA's members.
