LOCK HAVEN - Friday night's meeting between Cheyney and Lock Haven had its moments. Some good and some shaky.
However, in the end, it was a nice win for the Bald Eagles as they held off a late rally by the Wolves for an 85-77 win.
"Any win is a good win and they are a talented team," said Lock Haven head coach Mike Nestor. "For us to come in here and get a win over them is big for us. I thought we did a good job defensively in the first half and in the second, we did a good job of getting buckets when we needed them."
The game was about as close as it could have been in the first half as the two teams played through four ties and nine lead changes.
With the game tied at 22-all just under eight minutes left in the opening half, the Bald Eagles went on a scoring rampage that netted them a 17-4 run, the spurt climaxed by a desperation 3-point buzzer-beater by Wali Hepburn to give the Bald Eagles their 39-26 lead at the break.
"That (the big run) was huge for us," said Nestor. "It was a two, three, four-point game and I said guys you can either go up by ten or wind up in a tie ball game. We got lucky on that last shot to put us up by thirteen, but that (a cushion) is what we need at times."
After taking the 13-point lead into the locker room at the intermission, the Bald Eagles came out in the second period and kept the pressure on, building their lead up to as many as 21 points with nine minutes left before hanging on for the 85-77 win.
