LHU women beat Cheyney

LOCK HAVEN - It wasn't a classic and at times, it wasn't pretty.

However, the Lock Haven women's basketball team ran past Cheyney on Friday night, 74-53 in a PSAC-crossover game.

"It was nice to get the win and it was our first conference win of the year," Lock Haven coach Jennifer Smith said. "It was nice to get one (conference win) under our belt. At times it was sloppy, especially for a Division II basketball game, but sometimes that happens. We struggled through the first half, but we persevered and played a much better second half and were able to come out with the win."

The Lady Eagles held the early lead at 6-1, but the Lady Wolves answered with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 8-all seven minutes into the contest.

Lock Haven built a lead as large as 15 points in the first half before the pesky Lady Wolves battled back to close to 34-24 by the break.

"We just didn't play our brand of basketball," said Smith about the first half. "We didn't do a very good job on the boards in the first half and at times, we didn't play very good defense."

Following the break, the Lady Eagles played much better and gradually pulled away to the win.

"I went at them pretty hard at halftime, both as a team and individually," said Smith. "I just told them that their performances were subpar and that is not OK with me. I told them we had to take this game more seriously because Cheyney can be dangerous if you let them hang around. If you let them stay close with say five minutes left, they are going to fight for it."

The Lady Eagles had good balance with four players reaching double figures.

Kelsey Ryan and Marrysa Moyer led the way with a dozen points each. Moyer narrowly missed a double-double with eight rebounds, while Alex Brehony did a good job off the LHU bench to finish with nine points and seven boards.
