The Newtown massacre again confronts us with a choice between good and evil. We can look at the murderer and focus on gun violence and hatred or we can look at the loving, caring and protective response of the teachers and administrators.
Although the first response is to strike out at the evil, to arm the teachers and kill the killers, it is not our highest and best response. At this time of year, it would be better to set the teachers as a model. It is better to emphasize a nurturing, caring, loving and protective response. It is better to consider solutions that deal with mental health and combatting depression. The striking out at the killers no matter how justified (and this would be very justified) diminishes us. If on the other hand, we promote the good we elevate ourselves. It is our pathway to redemption.
