David Golfieri, of Watsontown, has recently published a book that is designed to help athletes organize their sporting events.
Golfieri, who is a carpentry teacher at Federal Correctional Institution, Allenwood, always has been an athletic person, but had not started racing competitively until 10 years ago.
When he realized he had memorabilia from his races, he decided to make it into an organized book. He also realized other athletes might find it very helpful, just as he had.
The log book he has created, titled, "Pedal, Paddle, Run" Events Journal, was published in October. The book features 16 event sections where athletes can record race statistics and race day notes, photos of pre- and post-races, and a section for race bibs.
"Being able to organize the photographs, race and medals and have it in a structured way that I could look back made it easy to use as a resource for the next year and planning," Golfieri said.
The book has three themes, "Community of Athletics," "Finishing" and "Inspiration." It also includes inspirational quotes from athletes and people that Golfieri believed fit the themes. The process of starting to publish the sports event journal was a bit tedious for Golfieri, but his passion to get this into the hands of the public helped him push through.
"Self-publishing was very time consuming. I started at the bottom of the learning curve, and you run into a lot of difficult times," he said.
After a year of configuring how he wanted the book to look, he put his own event journal together with pages detailing the races he had run.
"When I looked at it, I realized it was going to be a lot of work," Golfieri said. "I then reconstructed the book so that it was a little more fluid and easy, it was generalized for basic things."
He added: "I hung in there, kept working at it. I came up with the finished product and I'm very happy with it."
Golfieri's events journal is available locally at Otto Book Store, Elite Feet, The Bicycle Store, Vargo Outdoors, MoJo Running and Multisport. It also is available online at www.pedalpaddlerun.com.
