Count the carbs you consume
Susquehanna Health will hold a carbohydrate counting class at 5 p.m. Thursday at The Diabetes and Nutrition Care Center, third floor, Divine Providence Hospital.
Learn the basics of carbohydrate counting, what foods have carbs, good carbs vs. bad carbs and how to plan meals and snacks that promote weight loss and blood sugar control.

Extension offers 'Strong Women' classes
The Penn State Cooperative Extension Office in Montoursville will hold "Strong Women" classes from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Feb. 7 through May 9. A fee applies.
Women who are motivated to increase their physical activity, reduce their risk of osteoporosis, increase muscle tone and flexibility, improve balance and do something special for themselves are encouraged to sign up. The program is appropriate for both sedentary and very active women. Men also may register.
The benefits of strength training for women include increased muscle mass and strength; improved bone density and reduced risk for osteoporosis and related fractures; reduced risk for diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, depression and obesity; improved self-confidence, sleep and vitality.
Attendees should bring at least one adjustable ankle weight of 5 or 10 pounds; at least one set of dumbbells of 1, 3 or 5 pounds; a regular-size bath towel; and water to drink. Bottles of water may be used in place of hand weights. Adjustable ankle weights may also be worn on the wrists. Those who are not active may start without weights.

Electronics bingo planned
The Bulldog Cancer Chompers Relay for Life Team will hold an electronics bingo on Feb. 10 at the Antes Fort Fire Hall. Doors open at noon and play begins at 1 p.m.
Advance tickets are $20 and tickets at the door are $25. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
Prizes include iPad, iPad mini, 32-inch TV, Wii and many others.

Enjoy a night of intrigue at masquerade ball
WELLSBORO - Feb. 11 is the last day to purchase tickets for Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital Auxiliary's masquerade ball, which will be held Feb. 16 at the Penn Wells Hotel.
Ticket holders take advantage of a fun-filled social hour, themed games, dancing, fine dining and entertainment. The evening begins with an hors d'oeuvres social hour at 6, followed by fine dining at 7.
Dinner guests will be treated to a crisp Asian vinaigrette salad, then choose between beef bourguignon, chicken in phyllo or eggplant stuffed with Portobello mushrooms, all served with sauteed green bean-and-carrot bundles wrapped in bacon. Finishing off on a sweet note, they will enjoy a chocolate cup piped with white chocolate mousse and strawberry sauce.
From 9 to midnight, attendees will dance the night away courtesy of "Epic Party" DJ Entertainment.
Seating is limited and the suggested dress is semi-formal. The cost is $60 per person, and all proceeds raised benefit the hospital's new Same Day Surgery unit.

Take a power walking class
PENNSDALE - "Walkin' & Rockin' with Dani," a power walking and strength building program for individuals at any fitness level will be led by fitness instructor Dani Sayah on Mondays in February, from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at The LifeCenter in the Lycoming Mall.
Sayah is from Step by Step Walk Fitness, a fitness company specializing in indoor power walks. Walkers move at their own pace during a two-mile indoor walking program.
Participants should bring a small towel and water bottle and wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. A fee applies per class or per month.

Talk centers on heart health
LEWISBURG - Dr. Petra Lynch, a Geisinger interventional cardiologist and a member of the on-site Evangelical Community Hospital's cardiovascular care team, will discuss heart health awareness, heart disease prevention, intervention and treatment at a "Talk with the Doc" session on Feb. 12 at the hospital.
A complimentary meal will be provided at 5:30 p.m., and the talk begins at 6:30.
February is American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer in the U.S., causing 2,200 deaths each day.

Heart screen - 7-10 a.m. Feb. 14 at the Community Health Education Center. Appointment required. Screenings include: lipid panel (good, bad, and total cholesterol levels, triglycerides), blood pressure, body composition, cardiac risk assessment, blood oxygen saturation, and stroke assessments. Results will be reviewed by a physician and mailed to you. A 12-hour fast is required prior to the appointment.
Free heel scan clinic - 1-3 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Community Health Education Center. You qualify if you have not had a DXA scan in the past two years, have not had a heel bone density test in the past year and meet one of the following criteria: over the age of 65, post menopausal or pre-menopausal with high risk factors. Appointments required.
Blood pressure screenings - Mondays, 9 a.m.-noon; Wednesdays, noon-4 p.m.; and Fridays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Community Health Education Center.
