JERSEY SHORE - If Bald Eagle Area head wrestling coach Steve Millward was concerned about a possible hangover from a tough loss to Central Mountain in the District 6 Duals, his wrestlers put that fear to rest early in their Big 7 dual with Jersey Shore on Tuesday night.
The Eagles picked up 15 bonus points and won three toss-up matches on their way to a 42-27 win.
"The guys came out strong and wrestled well tonight," said Millward. "I was glad to see some of our lighter weights contribute to the match. Their effort gave us a nice cushion at the beginning of the dual meet. We left some points out there early, but our light weights pulled things together and won a couple of nice matches."
Winning the toss-up bouts for the Eagles were Joe Powers with a 5-2 decision at 145, Mitchell Taylor with a 7-3 win at 160 and Michael Kacik with a 2-1 win at 120.
Picking up the bonus points for BEA with falls were Travis Giedroc (113), Clint McCaslin (138), Aaron Varner (220) and Nate Sharkey (285). Jake Taylor added a technical fall at 182 and David Gawryla a major decision at 195.
The Eagles were without starters Ben Verbitsky and Ben Leskovansky, but they still managed to have enough firepower to cruise to the win.
"They are out with illness and right now, it is going through our room a little bit," Millward said. "We are just trying to combat it the best we can and right now we are going to take some time off and try to get healthy. Not that these matches aren't important to us, but we have some other goals that we are trying to accomplish."
While the Eagles didn't suffer the hangover syndrome, maybe the Bulldogs did following their victory in the District 4 Duals.
"The bottom line is that our kids didn't step up to the challenge," said Shore head coach Shawn Weaver. "We lost every toss-up match just because we didn't want it as bad as they did. That was the story of the match. Not only did we lose all three toss-up matches, we looked uninspired in doing it. We looked like a guy walking on thin ice who didn't want to be there. We didn't pull the trigger in some circumstances.
"We had majors and gave them up, we gave up a reversal with a half-second on the clock and you can't do those things and be successful."
Picking up falls for the Bulldogs were Zach Herman (152), Colton Killion (126) and Haydn Swartwood (132).
"You just can't get pinned," said Weaver. "I thought (Dominic) Loffredo battled for a guy just coming back from an injury and he saved us a point there, but overall, we just didn't step up and accept the challenge so I guess they wanted it (the win) more than we did tonight."
The Bulldogs will meet Franklin Regional in the first round of the PIAA State Duals on Thursday.
