Be careful

February 10, 2013
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

If Republican-dominated legislatures in PA, OH, MI, WI, MN and FL actually carry out the proposal to change the way presidential elections are held in those states in an effort to create a permanent Republican majority in the Electoral College, I suggest that they be careful of what they ask for.

The Constitution provides for states to be admitted to the Union in a number of ways, including the possibility that highly-urbanized and, presumably, more Democratic areas such as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Minneapolis, Orlando or Miami could break away from their "parent-states" and create states of their own, much like the manner in which West Virginia became a state at the height of the Civil War, in 1863.

While the number of U.S. Representatives may well remain the same, the individuals selected from those new states would probably be Democrats and, don't forget, each new state would get two US Senators to go with those Representatives.
