TUNKHANNOCK (AP) - A record 841 hunters turned out for the 14th annual District 9 Northeast Pennsylvania Trappers Association Coyote Hunt on Feb. 1-3 and brought in 58 wild dogs. Tim English, of Frenchville, took top honors for the heaviest animal at 46.95 pounds.
He was awarded $2,000 along with the daily prize of $250 for the heaviest coyote taken on Feb. 1.
English's male coyote was harvested in State Game Land 35 off Route 171 near Hallstead in Susquehanna County using a 12-gauge shotgun and dogs.
The hunt saw animals brought in from seven counties with weigh-ins at Triton Hose Co. On Feb. 1, Ryan Gildea took top honors of $250 for his 46.25-pound coyote harvested in Luzerne County out of 28 brought in that day.
Glen Tucker's 45.25-pound coyote harvested in Wayne County was the largest of 14 brought in last Sunday.
Steve Moxen, of Gibson, said hunters thought they were getting 1 to 4 inches of snow last weekend.
"That really would have helped with tracking," Moxen said, but wasn't complaining after bringing in two coyotes late last Sunday morning, his first successes in three years of participating in the regional hunt.
Three years ago, the hunt brought in a record 59 coyotes. Of the 58 coyotes taken this weekend, 32 were male.
Kyle Van Why was on hand to do some scientific sampling - pending hunter approval -for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services Unit in Harrisburg, along with students from East Stroudsburg University and Juniata College.
