Anyone who comes into the South Williamsport branch of the U.S. Post Office on West Southern Ave. has certainly seen John behind the counter for many years. A smile on his face, a big hello and most often, a slight jab at whatever he feels like saying that particular day.
Telling the customer in front of you that the guy behind you will pick up the bill or try to charge you double, asking how many tens of books of stamps you need, all in fun with John.
It is a rare thing to find a person who becomes not only the nice employee of a business that everyone knows, but becomes the "face" of that business.
On Thursday, January 31st, the face of that particular post office will change. John will be retiring!
Now for those who know him, he has threatened this for many years. His story of traveling in his RV and enjoying some of the country which he has sent letters and boxes to each and every day. Seeing the zip codes that he has memorized in that sharp mind of his and has shouted out to customers over and over again.
Well . . . the day has finally come for this hard working military veteran and dedicated federal employee.
Make sure to stop by and just say "Thank YOU JOHN!"
You won't find a better man and a nicer guy. I wish the new faces luck in their attempt to replace his personality and likeability, but you have some BIG shoes to fill!
God Bless you John and thank you from the entire community for just . . . being you. Enjoy your retirement and your gold watch.
