18-year-old accused of beating stepmother
WELLSBORO - Cody L. Gower, 18, of 132 Horn Hill Road, Morris, was charged by state police with simple assault and harassment recently after he allegedly hit his stepmother with a steering wheel at their residence.
Gower and his stepmother argued over his grades at school on Feb. 9, and he told her, using profanity, that he didn't have to do a thing because she was his stepmother, according to documents filed at District Judge Rob Repard's office.
Police said he picked up a vehicle steering wheel in a threatening manner and hit her with it when she tried to grab it from him, almost knocking her to the floor.
She got the wheel away from him, but he then grabbed her hair before his father intervened, and a struggle ensued between them, police said.
Gower was jailed in lieu of $5,000 bail and his preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday.
Man allegedly billed employer for gun parts
WELLSBORO - Jacob N. Fisher, 21, of 406 E. Main St., Elkland, was charged by state police with theft recently, after he allegedly ordered several metal pieces and charged them to his employer in order to make a pistol into an automatic weapon.
Fisher ordered 36 metal pieces, including 12 end caps, 12 locater bars and 12 rods, on Feb. 8 at Hitachi Metals Automotive Components, Route 287, without the company's permission, according to documents filed at District Judge Rob Repard's office.
Police said Fisher took possession of them when they were delivered and hid them in his vehicle, which was parked in the parking lot.
One of the parts makes a Glock 17 handgun into a fully automatic pistol, police said.
Fisher was jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail and his preliminary hearing is set for Friday.
Frantic, homeless man accused of alarming staff
MANSFIELD - Wayne A. Ayers, 41, no address available, was charged by borough police with public drunkenness and disorderly conduct following a Feb. 8 incident at Sheetz, 85 W. Wellsboro St.
Police were dispatched for a report of a frantic person asking to use the store phone to call police because he had been in an accident, causing alarm and inconvenience to store employees, according to documents filed at District Judge James Carlson's office.
Police said he was confused, emotionally unstable and under the influence of a controlled substance.
He later allegedly admitted to using bath salts four hours prior to the incident and that he had run out of gas while trying to locate a rehab, running his car into the bushes just before running out of gas.
He couldn't remember where his vehicle was located, and police said they could not locate it.
He also had been at the Pump and Pantry on South Main Street, alarming the employees there, police said.
Ayers, was jailed in lieu of $5,000 bail and his preliminary hearing was continued for 90 days.
Police: Driver fled crash scene, broke into cabin
MANSFIELD - Darren M. Giles, 27, no address given, was charged by state police with burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief after he allegedly broke into a cabin and spent the night there on Sept. 10.
Giles broke into the cabin at 356 Ogdensburg Road by breaking a sliding glass window and, once inside, took shoes and clothing, ate food and drank beverages and spent the night there, according to documents filed at District Judge James Carlson's office.
Police said Giles had been involved in a car crash and fled the scene, leaving his severely damaged vehicle and an injured passenger inside.
The cabin owner, Arnold Mogel, arrived Sept. 11 and said he found a bloody sheet that had been used by someone to cover up with on the couch. Mogel said he also found a note asking the cabin owner not to call police because Giles was "in enough trouble as it is."
Giles was jailed in lieu of $30,000 bail and waived his Wednesday preliminary hearing. His county court arraignment was set for March 18.
