Roundup: CM wrestlers top Shore

February 15, 2013
From staff reports , Williamsport Sun-Gazette

In all 12 contested bouts, the wrestler who scored the opening takedown won the match as Central Mountain beat Jersey Shore Thursday night, 52-18.

Wildcat wrestlers won eight of those matches.

"Most wrestlers know it sets the tone for the match," Jersey Shore head coach Shawn Weaver said. "It puts you at ease to be up 2-0. It gets you into the flow. It just sets your pace and allows you to set your pace. We need to understand that we need to be aggressive right off the bat."

CM's Blaze Buckwalter - down to 182 for the first time - got things started for CM, needing only 38 seconds to secure a fall over Dom Loffredo.

Loc Long, up a 195, racked up two takedowns en route to an 8-4 victory over Nate Lose. Cameron Porter followed with a 10-3 decision over Jake Huling and just like that CM was up 12-0.

Following a forfeit to CM's Bryce Hanley at 285, the lineup flipped over and Shore's Noah Ulmer picked up six quick points for the Bulldogs. Ulmer picked up a first-period fall over Ryan Moore and cut into the CM lead, 18-6.

The Wildcats bounced back as Keanen Bottorf (113) and Chase Andrus (120) each secured falls and pushed the lead to 30-6.

Colton Killion (126) and Hayden Swortwood (132) picked up back-to-back 4-2 decision for the Bulldogs and pulled the match to 30-12.

CM's Zach Knepp picked up a 9-0 major decision over Austin White, before Shore's Zak Herman pinned Darrin Masorti making the score 34-18.

Central Mountain closed out the match with two straight falls and forfeit. Chad Reese (152) and Gavin Caprio continued to impress with falls, while Devin Stacey (170) picked up the forfeit and secured the 52-18 final score.

"I think we wrestled well," CM coach Doug Buckwalter said. "Overall, we did the things we needed to in spots and got the bonus points when we needed them. I am pleased. Jersey Shore is a much-improved team. Coach Weaver has done an excellent job with them."

Jersey Shore (13-6) will be back in action in the District 4 Class AAA tournament next Saturday.

"I thought we were a little thin tonight," Weaver said. "Not having Caputo and Bashaw in our lineup tonight hurt us some. I thought we wrestled well in some spots and not so good in other spots. We gave up too many bonus points tonight. Our guys fought earlier in the match, but then had nothing left to give. We can't get pinned in matches like this."

In college wrestling, Lycoming sophomore Brian Watkins earned his 20th victory of the season and the Warriors wrapped up the dual meet season with a 30-13 win over Gettysburg.

Watkins, from Southern Columbia, defeated Will Cauffman at 157 pounds. Cody Barbiche (125), Greg Wetzel (165) and Max Lamport (285) all had falls for the Warriors (8-8).

In girls basketball, Central Columbia outscored Hughesville by 10 points in the second quarter and went on to defeat the Spartans, 58-41. Gabby Gavitt scored 14 points for Hughesville in its season finale.

Mansfield's Jackie Hillson and Emily James scored 15 points each and the Tigers defeated Liberty, 62-47.

Aisha Evans scored 25 points in defeat as Williamsport fell 68-43 to Altoona.
