Matthew Aaron Verna, 22, of Perkasie, faces charges after he was caught allegedly trying to steal $265 worth of merchandise from Kohl's, 251 William St., on Jan. 31, city police said.
In addition to charges of misdemeanor shoplifting and receiving stolen property, Verna also has been charged with false reports to law enforcement for initially giving police a false identification.
Police suspect he lied about his identity because there was a bench warrant for his arrest. Automatically committed to the Lycoming County Prison on the warrant, Verna since has been arraigned before District Judge Allen P. Page III and recommitted in lieu of $10,000 bail.
