Local roundup: Seniors lead Montgomery girls

February 17, 2013
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Seniors Katie Scarborough and Sidney Schoch made their final game a memorable one, combining for 23 points and 13 rebounds while helping Montgomery beat Bucktail, 54-43, on Saturday. Scarborough (13 points) nearly had a double-double and Corrine Shaffer scored 19 points for the Red Raiders (10-12) while Bucktail's Maria Morgan had 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Meghan Trenholm scored 16 points and Emily Sholder added 15 as St. John Neumann tuned up for the playoffs with a 46-29 win over playoff-bound Galeton. The Knights are 12-10.

Jersey Shore won in a low-scoring game with South WIlliamsport, 38-19. The Bulldogs were led by Kayla Allen's 17 points.

In boys basketball, Warrior Run's Colin Foresman finished with 12 points and the Defenders ended their season with a 41-38 overtime victory over Millville.

In men's basketball, Joe Bell scored a game-high 26 points but Mansfield couldn't make up a 10-point halftime deficit in dropping an 89-77 decision to Cheyney.

In women's basketball, Katie Fitzpatrick and Alyssa DeRichie each recorded their first collegiate double-doubles to lead Mansfield to a 75-58 win over Cheyney.

The win snapped a 10-game losing skid and served as a measure of revenge for the Mountaineers after losing to the Wolves earlier this year.

Bucknell had a 16-point lead at the half but a Lafayette buzzer-beater at the end of regulation sent the game to overtime and ultimately a 66-61 decision in favor of the Leopards at Sojka Pavilion. Audrey Dotson led the Bison (13-12, 4-6 Patriot League) with 19 points.

In college wrestling, two Penn College wrestlers claimed individual championships and two others finished second during the Penn State University Athletic Conference/United States Collegiate Athletic Association championships at Rec Hall.

Winning titles for the Wildcats were 133-pounder Ryan Hart and 157-pounder Tyler Myers.

Second-place finishers were 165-pounder Austin Clark and 174-pounder Logan Gresock.

Penn College, with 95.5 points, finished second in the PSUAC portion of the tournament behind Penn State DuBois, which had 168 points. The Apprentice School, of Newport News, Va., won the USCAA tournament with 176 points. Penn State DuBois and the Wildcats came in second and third, respectively.

Also for Penn College, Dan Frankenfield finished third at 174, Alex Muller was fourth at 184 and Cesar Gonzalez was sixth at 141.

In college softball, Lock Haven will not be back in action this weekend as the remainder of the Shaw University Softball Challenge has been canceled because of rain and snow in the Raleigh, N.C., area.

Lock Haven's pair of games on Saturday were canceled and the Lady Eagles will not play today.

In college track and field, Mansfield had a solid showing at Cornell University's Denault Invitational in the final tune-up before the conference championships.

Freshman Jordan Boothe hit a PSAC qualifying time in the 800-meter run with his mark of 2:01.39.

Sophomore Olivia Lopes, a Lewisburg graduate, and freshman Allison Macon finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 300-meter dash. Lopes came in at 42.15 while Macon finished at 43.31.

Freshman Latimere Campbell came away with a fourth-place finish in the men's 300-meter dash at 37.13 while Jeysonlee Jones took seventh at 38.67.

Michael Leiwant won the 600m run with a mark of 1:33.81.
