JERSEY SHORE - A 44-year-old woman was killed in a freak, tragic accident on Sunday afternoon when she was dragged "a considerable distance" by her horse which suddenly bolted from her as she was reportedly grooming the animal on her farm near Oriole, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.
Renee A. Eck Martin Shatzer, 44, of 1664 Pine Woods Road, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Jersey Shore Hospital emergency room, Kiessling said. He said the woman died of "multiple blunt force trauma injuries to the upper body."
Volunteer firefighters and paramedics responded to the farm in Limestone Township just before 1 p.m. after a neighbor called 911 to report the accident.
"She was grooming her horse when the animal apparently was spooked. A rope tied to the horse was wrapped around the woman's arm. She couldn't break free of the horse" as it took off running through the field, Kiessling said he was told.
Shatzer was dragged "a considerable distance" before her upper body struck a tree, Kiessling said.
