When the doors open at 5 p.m. Saturday at Unity Christian Fellowship, 734 W. Fourth St., the celebration that happens inside is expected to spread across Williamsport.
"It's Your Time" is the theme of the church's 10th Black History Month celebration, but the praiseful singing, dancing, poetry reading and discussion inside is not solely reserved for the black community, said Sister Diane DeVaughn, a church member and event organizer along with Brother Raymond DeVaughn.
"This is a multicultural celebration," she said.
Pastor and Bishop Sidney D. Wheatley is expected to share a message of hope and encouragement, but the event also is a time when those with dreams, visions and ideas they want to pursue are encouraged to share them, Diane DeVaughn said.
"If you have a passion or vision that you've been sitting on, it's your time to pursue your destiny," she said. That can be furthering education, starting a business, or rebuilding or reconciliation of family and friends, she added.
It's also time to speak to the city and community's youths about the black forefathers and how their passion and drive led to the freedoms and civil rights that are available for anyone of any race or religion today.
