Mary Page Allen, 94 and 5/6, died on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, in her home in Montoursville. Mary was a native of Williamsport and a member of a long-established local family. Both her grandfather and great-grandfather were Lycoming County judges; her father, Herold Page, and mother, Mary Metzger Page, were the proprietors of Page Funeral Home.
Mary graduated from Williamsport High School in 1926 and then attended Russell Sage College in New York where she earned a bachelor's degree in Fashion Merchandising. Upon her return to Williamsport, she worked on the floor at Brosman's.
Mary was married in 1940, and she and her former husband, Richard C. Allen, had two children. After a brief stint living in the south while Dick served in World War II, the family returned to Williamsport where her husband joined the family funeral business.
Mary was active in many local social service organizations. She was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. As her children grew, she devoted great energy to volunteering at Beck Elementary School, providing breakfast and tutoring before school to at-risk children. She was among the founding families of the Grampian Hills Club and for more than a decade she enjoyed daily swims and dinner there with family and friends.
Mary is pre-deceased by her sister, Jean Page Meckbach, and survived by her son and daughter, Richard Page Allen and Mary Metzger Allen; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She graced and enriched the lives of all who were lucky enough to know her. She will be remembered for her spunky irreverence and her incredible perseverance in the face of the challenges that life presented her. In the words of one friend, "Mary makes me not afraid to be old!"
Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St., followed immediately by a graveside service at Wildwood Cemetery. The family thanks Susquehanna Hospice for the outstanding care and comfort they provided. www.SandersMortuary.com
