Read Across America Week is set to begin next week and the Loyalsock Township School Board heard Wednesday how Donald E. Schick Elementary School is planning to celebrate.
Trish Cozza, district librarian, explained there is a push to incorporate dental hygiene into the week of celebrating reading this year. As such, she has been asking local dental offices to donate toothbrushes to the school to pass out to students.
As for the reading aspect of the week, she asked board members to volunteer a part of their day to visit the elementary school students during the week.
"I'd like to challenge the board members to come into the elementary school and read," Cozza said.
Board member William Carlucci said that he enjoyed his experiences reading to the students in the past.
"Kindergarteners, they love it to death," he said of the students' joy.
The elementary school has a variety of activities planned for the week, from special dress up days to serving green eggs and ham one day for lunch.
Cozza told board members they will enjoy being a part of the week.
"I get to read to kids everyday and it's the greatest gift (from her job)," she said.
In other business, the board unanimously voted to accept a $32,000 donation from the Loyalsock Township supervisors for the district's school resource officer program.
The donation will be used during the 2013-14 school year and to expand services to the elementary school.
