The Community Theatre League's "Ray of Light Awards" is in the midst of its fifth year.
Designed to develop and promote the efforts of high school musical theater and drama departments, the "Ray of Light Awards" competition is a school year-long process beginning in mid-September when shows are selected and culminating in mid-May when the formal awards ceremony is held.
The norm for staging comedies and dramas is in the fall, with musicals the fare offered in the spring - often with a couple of exceptions. Tonight marks the beginning of the adjudication for this spring's 12 musical entries.

“Godspell,”?presented by Midd-West High School, will compete for recognition at the “Ray of Light Awards,” which will be held at 6 p.m. May 12 at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St.
CTL's Administrative Manager Jacquie Engel, who coordinates the "Ray of Light" program, notes that a production number from each high school's musical is staged at the awards ceremony at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St. But many attendees have asked when the various high schools are presenting their shows, as often two or three schools choose the same weekend to present their musical.
By increasing the radius to 40 miles of the downtown Community Theatre a couple of years ago, CTL has seen more high schools able and very eager to participate.
"This year we have 19 adjudicators who do a lot of traveling to see each of the shows", Engel said, as high schools throughout Lycoming, Clinton, Snyder and Northumberland Counties have submitted shows for judging. Separate awards are given for Best Large Scale and Small Scale Musicals.
