The Penn College wrestling team hosted the Mid-East Conference Championships Saturday with 15 teams and 91 wrestlers. Freshman Ryan Hart won the 133-pound weight class and sophomore Logan Gresock was runner up at 174. The Wildcats placed third as a team behind champion University of Maryland Baltimore County and second place Penn State DuBois. The tournament is also a qualifier for the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Championships.
In addition to Hart and Gresock, junior Tyler Myers, sophomores Austin Clark and Paul Crutchlow and freshmen Daniel Frankenfield and Alexander Muller all earned berths to the national championships.
Myers placed third at 157 taking down fellow conference rival Shane Alterio. Crutchlow also came in third at 184 and teammate Muller was sixth in the same class. Rounding out the place finishers were Clark in fourth at 165 and Frankenfield in fifth at 174.
The Wildcats will have a little less than two weeks to prep for the March 14 championships held this year in Allen, Texas.
Sophomore 157-pounder Brian Watkins and junior 174-pounder Johnathan Secor each placed fifth to lead the Lycoming College wrestling team at the NCAA Mideast Regionals at Ohio Northern. The top three wrestlers in each weight class earned bids to the NCAA Division III Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 15-16.
In men's lacrosse, a nine-goal first half, including five scores from junior Matt McCaffer, helped Lycoming earn its first win of the year, 13-7 over Gwynedd-Mercy.
In college softball, Lock Haven swept a doubleheader with Philadelphia University. The Lady Eagles took game one, 9-7 and went on to win game two, 11-3. Bridgette Clarke led the way for The Haven (3-1) in game one. Clarke went 3 for 4 with three RBI. Nicole Smith was the winning pitcher for LHU.
Alicia Cacciotti had a big game 2 for LHU, going 3 for 3, including a three-run home run. Alyssa Smith was 3 for 3 in game two and scored two runs.
Mansfield's softball games against Lander and Columbus State in Spartanburg, S.C., were cancelled because of inclement weather.
In college baseball, Mansfield drove in a combined 27 runs on 36 hits to power past the College of St. Rose 11-4 in the opener and 16-6 in the finale Saturday morning in the Mountaineers season-opening series.
In high school swimming, Williamsport's boys finished second and its girls finished fourth in the District 2-4 Class AAA championships this weekend at the Wilkes-Barre Catholic Youth Center. Only the champions were guaranteed spots in the PIAA championships later this month.
Shaun Smith had the lone second-place finish on either side, coming in second in the 100 free in 49.68 seconds. Cody Schwoyer was third in the 100 back and 500 free and part of the 200 relay team that was third. John Good was also third in the 200 free.
