Joseph A. Pecchia, 82, of 610 Shaw St., Avis, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, in the Jersey Shore Hospital Emergency Room.
Born April 12, 1930, in Avis, he was the son of Samuel Pecchia and the former Annie Magent.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, the former Helen A. Axman, on Sept. 18, 1990. They were united in marriage on June 11, 1968, in the Church of Saint Luke in Jersey Shore.
Joe graduated from the Jersey Shore High School, earned his B.S. from Lock Haven State College and his M.B.S. from Bucknell University. After 40 years as an educator, he retired from the Jersey Shore School District as a science teacher and guidance counselor. For many years he was a trumpet player with the "Keystone Society of Swing Band." He also was a member of the Church of Saint Luke, Knights of Columbus, Sons Of Italy and the Lock Haven Kiwanis Club.
From 1948 to 1949, Joe honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by one brother, Samuel L. Pecchia of Avis; one nephew, John A. (Amy) Pecchia of Jersey Shore; one niece, Mary P. (Jay) Maneval of Collomsville; four great-nephews; and one great-niece.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the Church of Saint Luke, 118 Kendall Ave., Jersey Shore. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening in the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore. Father Bert Kozen will officiate. Burial will be in the Jersey Shore Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Jersey Shore Honor Guard.
