Joan E. Hartzel, 76, of Montoursville, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Gatehouse in Divine Providence Hospital. She was born May 11, 1936, in Mifflinburg, a daughter of William and Dorothy A. Zimmerman Hackenberg.
Joan graduated from Mifflinburg High School in 1954, where she participated in the band, and was an all-state band member three years in a row. She retired as a bookkeeper for Staiman Brothers, enjoyed reading, crocheting and her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, C. Robert Hartzel, with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage; her children, Carol D. (Paul) Zacher of Hughesville, Donald E. "Skip" Solomon of Mifflinburg and Robert "Scott" (Crystal) Hartzel of Muncy; brothers, William Hackenberg of Northumberland, Thomas Hackenberg of New Berlin, Richard Hackenberg and Michael Hackenberg, both of Mifflinburg; sisters, Jean Wagner of Mifflinburg, Gladys Walter of Millheim and Dorothy Walter of Mifflinburg; five grandchildren, Christian, Andrea, Kyle, Austin and Landon; and a great-grandson, Xander.
She was predeceased by a brother, Gary Hackenberg.
Private funeral and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
