Northumberland writer John L. Moore will discuss the experiences and genealogy of Hiram Pidcoe, a Civil War soldier from Williamsport, at the March 23 meeting of the Lycoming County Genealogical Society.
Pidcoe was a member of the Pidcock family, who settled in Pennsylvania before William Penn.
Moore is the family historian of the Pidcock Family Association, which was organized in 1913. He is a direct descendant of John Pidcock, who had settled along the Delaware River in Bucks County by 1679. His ancestors include veterans of the American Revolution and the Civil War.
A retired journalist, Moore writes a history column twice a month for The Sunday Item, Sunbury.
His 45-year newspaper career included stints as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal; as managing editor of The Sentinel at Lewistown; as editorial page editor and managing editor at The Daily Item in Sunbury; and as editor of the Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journal in Bethlehem, Pa.
He has written six books about the Pennsylvania Frontier.
The books include "Warriors, Wagons & Wolves," (2012); "Traders, Travelers & Tomahawks" (1999); "Cannons, Cattle & Campfires" (2002); "Rivers, Raiders & Renegades" (2004); "Pioneers, Prisoners & Peace Pipes," (2006); and "Settlers, Soldiers & Scalps" (2008).
Moore has participated in several archaeological excavations of Native American sites.
These include the Village of Nain in Bethlehem.; the City Island project in Harrisburg conducted by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission; and a Bloomsburg University dig in 1999 at a Native American site near Nescopeck.
