HUGHESVILLE - Borough council authorized spending $59,065 on a new Ford F-550 dump truck at its meeting Monday night.
The borough needed a new truck to haul salt and dead leaves and had just spent more than $1,300 to replace wheel cylinders on the old dump truck. Whether that vehicle will make it through leaf pickup season is a "crapshoot," Councilman Andrew Mook said.
There's a six month lead-time to receiving the truck once it has been ordered, said Dale Cahn, public works supervisor.
"These trucks are a hot item," Cahn said. "Chevy and Dodge got rid of them."
In other business, council discussed doing work on several borough alleys and two streets this construction season. The state Department of Transportation provided an estimate of $84,428 for milling and adding base to four alleys, and $35,258 for resurfacing Academy Street, between Spruce and Main, and Walnut Street, between Main and Railroad.
"All of the work on this sheet is kind of a necessity for this year," said Council President Jeff Berger.
The borough has about $92,000 in its streets fund and will receive about $45,000 in state liquid fuels tax monies on April 1, which must be used on streetwork.
In other matters, council approved several springtime events at its meeting Monday night:
The Hughesville Rotary Club will hold its annual Easter Egg hunt on Mar. 23 at Bodine Park at 1 p.m.
The Rotarians will sponsor an "E-cycle" event on April 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. across from the Hughesville Fire Department. Electronics of all kinds, from mainframe computers to answering machines, along with ink cartridges and cellphones can all be dropped off for safe recycling. Household paper shredding will also be available from 10 a.m. to noon.
Set the annual spring cleanup week for May 6-10. This year, people should put brush that needs picked up in the alleys behind their homes, rather than in front on the street.
Approved two parades to be held this spring - the East Lycoming Little League parade will be held at 9 a.m. April 27 and at 9:30 a.m. on Memorial Day, the annual American Legion parade will kick off.
