Milton's Ryan Solomon cemented his status as the No. 1-ranked 195-pound wrestler in the country on Sunday when he defeated Blair Academy's Frank Mattiace, 2-1 in a tie-breaker, at the annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic which matched up the best seniors from Pennsylvania against the best from the United States.
Despite a win for Solomon, and fellow District 4 wrestler Zain Retherford of Benton, Team USA?beat Team Pennsylvania, 22-18.
Wrestling at the University of Pittsburgh's Fitzgerald Fieldhouse, where Solomon will wrestle in college, the senior used an escape point in the third period and a stalling point against Mattiace in the first 30-second tie-break to score his points.
Solomon was just a week removed from winning his second PIAA?Class AA?state title for Milton, and becoming the school's career wins leader. Mattiace was a two-time Prep National Champion for Blair Academy.
Retherford, the No. 1-ranked 138-pounder in the country and coming off his second state championship, used a third-period reversal and a brilliant third-period ride of New Jersey's Anthony Ashnault to win, 2-1. Ashnault was a four-time New Jersey state champion who was 170-0 in his career.
