Gary H. Smith, 74, of Myerstown, Pa., formerly of New York State and Jersey Shore, Pa., died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at the VA Medical Center, Lebanon, Pa.
Born in Sistersville, W.Va., on May 31, 1938, he was the son of the late Gail H. and Marybelle (Turner) Smith.
A graduate of Sistersville High School, he earned a bachelor's degree at Marietta College in Ohio, a master's degree at Syracuse University, all in German and Russian languages, and he later earned his teaching degree and principal certification at Oswego University.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as an Airman First Class linguist and code breaker from 1956-1963.
He was employed as a professor at Syracuse University, taught in the LaFayette Central School District in New York from 1970 to 1983, and served as principal and Director of Special Education in the Jersey Shore Area School District, Jersey Shore, Pa., from 1983 until his retirement on June 29, 1998.
An avid golfer, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by a son, Gregg, husband of Cindy Smith of Myerstown; a daughter, Sara Smith, of Jersey Shore, Pa.; grandchildren, Cooper and Calista Smith; a brother, Steven, husband of Cass Smith of New York; and brothers-in-law, Lewis Frix and James McEnery. He was preceded in death by sisters, Tammy Frix, Pamela McEnery, and Christine Smith.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore, Pa. Full military honors will be conducted by the Jersey Shore Honor Guard Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Salladasburg Cemetery.
