James A. Wertman Sr., 85, of Muncy, formerly of Hughesville, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at the Muncy Valley Hospital, Skilled Nursing Unit.
He was born Nov. 7, 1927, in Muncy, a son of the late John C. and Florence H. Smith Wertman On Jan. 6, 1945, he married Irma L. Wishard, who survives.
He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Hughesville. Jim retired from Sprout-Bower Manufacturing in 1989, after 42 years in the tool and die department. He served in the U.S. Navy, 1945 to 1947, aboard the USS Boxer, USS Floyds Bay and the NSD Okinawa. Jim was a member of the Sprout Waldron Quarter Century Club, A.A.S.R. Northern Masonic/Scottish Rite, Muncy Blue Lodge No. 299, F.&A.M., Zafar Grotto, American Legion Post 35, Hughesville, VFW Post 3428, Muncy and the Muncy Moose No. 866. He was an avid bowler and earlier in life was involved with the Cub Scouts and Little League of Hughesville.
In addition to his wife of 68 years, he is survived by a son, Dale J. (Diana) Wertman, Muncy; daughter, Pamela S. (Mark) Hulyo; eight grandchildren, Scott, James, Mechelle, Dale Jr., Nicholas, Mitchell, Nathaniel and Peyton; six great-grandchildren, Blake, Tyler, Kayla, Malik, Nevaeh and Mason; and a brother, Edward "Sonny" (Lola) Wertman, Muncy.
Jim was preceded in death by a son, James A. Wertman Jr.; two grandchildren, Teresa Wertman and David Wertman; brother, Max Wertman; and two sisters, Mae "Dolly" Johnson and Eleanor Rohm.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, by Rev. Jane O'Borski. The interment will be in the Green Lawn Memorial Park, with graveside military honors accorded by combined veterans organizations. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where a Masonic funeral service will be held at 8:45 p.m. by Muncy Lodge No. 299.
