MILTON - A traffic crash involving five vehicles took the life of a Turbotville woman at about 9 p.m. Sunday in Kelly Township, Union
Ellen Marie Kear, 35, was killed after being struck head-on by a car driven by Edward Peace, of Gorham, N.Y.
Just before the crash, state police at Milton received a call from a concerned citizen who informed them that someone was driving the wrong way in the northbound lane of Route 15, just north of AJK Boulevard near the West Milton exit.
According to police records, the driver was Peace, 81.
Following the initial call, state police headed to the scene but were too late to prevent the crash.
Just before the crash, a line of cars in the northbound lane were stopped at the red light at an intersection. Peace allegedly drove through the intersection, still heading in the wrong direction, and crashed into the line of cars, authorities say.
Peace's vehicle first sideswiped a car driven by an unidentified New York state driver, records state.
Peace's vehicle then struck that of Kear, which pushed her vehicle backward into another car stopped at the light. That car was driven by an unidentified woman from Wellsboro, according to police.
The cars continued to crash into one another in sequence. An unidentified driver from Milton attempted to avoid the wreckage but was struck by the front of the Wellsboro woman's vehicle, authorities said.
Three of the vehicles, including Peace and Kear's, continued traveling south after the initial impact. All three came to rest in a grassy area just east of the highway, authorities say.
At some point in the collision, Kear was thrown from her vehicle and run over by Peace's Cadillac, authorities say.
Kear was pronounced dead at the scene by Union County Coroner Wanda Walters, according to reports.
Both lanes of Route 15 were closed while authorities worked to reconstruct the events of the crash. The roadway was re-opened after several hours.
