As the current crisis in Cyprus continues to unfold, it would behoove Americans to stop and take a look around at what is truly happening. The "troika" which is composed of the European Union, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Central Bank has effectively ruled that it is legal to usurp funds from depositors who hold over 100,000 euros in Cypriot banks. Cypriot patriots are protesting this action of saving the banking sector due to the banks' own foibles. Long gone are the days of a country's sovereignty. Good thing this is so far away from the bubble most of us live in.
What does this have to do with America? As the contagion spreads throughout Europe and as Americans continue to sell their currency to countries such as China and Japan, austerity will soon come knocking on our doors. What will happen when our foreign debtors call on America to make good on her debts? Will our out-of-control banking system, that commits fraud and deliberately cheats and manipulates contracts, put a moratorium on our bank accounts, much like the troika did in Cyprus? What will happen when austerity comes to America? Will the common American understand why this is happening to their money (or Federal Reserve notes, to be more accurate)? If we can't access our money, will there be protests and chanting in the streets? Will people be angry? Will riots ensue? Should we be concerned?
We are told that the stock market is at an all-time high; unemployment keeps decreasing; housing starts are heating up; and Americans should keep on doing what we do, spend and spend. Sadly, the old adage of the house of cards crumbling will soon be a reality. There are over 20 million people unemployed in this country. The American middle class is getting poorer and poorer, yet there are more American billionaires than ever before. Those behind the banking frauds and scandals are not being prosecuted despite the federal laws that have been instituted. Those who are in power uphold the status quo, despite the promises for change and reform. Unfortunately, the gravy train is going to run off the track and the end is fast approaching. What can be done?
Where are the Martin Luther Kings, the John Lennons, the John Kennedys, and the other great Americans who understood what a "free" Republic was capable of? These men were silenced and no one stepped in and took their place. It seems that we have become apathetic and scared of standing up for our freedoms and our treasures. Perhaps it's time to voice our opinion and fight back against corporate and banking welfare and the coup that has taken over our country, government, and military. Perhaps it's time to voice our objections against those who would trample the constitution due to the narrow limits of "national security". As Ben Franklin once said, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety".
