Samuel W. Hess Jr., 81, of Williamsport, passed away on April 9, 2013, at the Gatehouse, while surrounded by family.
Sam was born in Williamsport on Nov. 10, 1931, a son of Samuel W. Sr. and Madeline R. Price Hess.
He retired in 1992 as supervisor of maintenance and custodial services for Williamsport School District after 33 years of service. Sam was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish and a former member of the Gesang Verein Harmonia, he coached Newberry Little League in the early 1970s and he and his wife were foster parents for 16 children in the late 1960s. Sam enjoyed model trains, playing banjo and the harmonica, and recording and listening to music.

He served as a master sergeant with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Troy VFW and Troy American Legion.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Jane L. Kane.; three sons, Christopher W. (Bernardine) Hess of Jersey Shore, Michael D. Hess of Williamsport, Samuel W. (Connie) Hess III of Williamsport; daughter, Debora (William) Clarkson of Williamsport; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Peggy Dooris of Montoursville.
In addition to his parents, a brother, Robert Hess and two sisters, Dorothy Deljanovan and Barbara Kibler, preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Saturday April 13, 2013, at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 702 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, with the Rev. David W. Bechtel officiating with burial to follow at Wildwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Crouse Funeral Home, 133 E. Third St., Williamsport, and a family vigil service will be held.
