As I read the article on churches being divided on same-sex unions, I was grieved to read of one minister's statement, "Scriptural prohibitions against homosexuality are as irrelevant today as scriptural prohibitions against eating shellfish, mixing fabrics, or women speaking in church." He is mixing God's moral law with others such as the Old Testament dietary law which does not apply to this issue. For thousands of years it was clearly understood from the Scriptures that homosexuality is sin.
It has only been in the past few decades that some people have thought they knew better than God. In Matthew 5 Jesus made it perfectly clear that He did not come to abolish the moral law, but He actually intensified its meaning. In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 it lists homosexuality, amongst other sins, that the person committing them will never enter heaven.
Now, take this to the logical conclusion of what was stated earlier by the minister. If homosexuals are no longer in sin, then neither are the sexually immoral, adulterers, thieves, robbers, drunkards, revilers, and swindlers listed in the passage.
Now, for the absolutely fantastic news found in Verse 11, where it states, "And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."
There is hope for everyone. I do not want to leave people where they were, but I want people to know the transforming power of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we recently celebrated. Jesus can transform people that accept Him as their Savior, repent of their sins, and by His power live a holy life.
When that happens, lives are changed by the awesome power of God.
