JERSEY SHORE - Any way you look at it, when Mifflinburg and Jersey Shore met head on Monday afternoon in a HAC-I baseball game, it was a display of outstanding high school baseball.
When the issue was finally decided, the Bulldogs prevailed by a 3-0 score, the same identical outcome as when the two teams first met this season a month ago.
"That was just a game that featured old school baseball, you know, good pitching, good defense and timely hitting," said Shore head coach Matt O'Brien. "That is what it came down to and fortunately we were able to come out on top."
The game featured an outstanding pitching duel between Shore's Travis Eiswerth and Mifflinburg's Oakley Whitesel. For the game, Eiswerth allowed the Wildcats no runs on four hits, striking out six and walking two.
"I wasn't using any one pitch to set up the other," said Eiswerth. "I just threw whatever was called. My curveball was working good today, my fastball wasn't bad, my changeup was spotty so when they had problems hitting the curveball, we just kept throwing it."
As the game wore on, Eiswerth said that some of the softer pitches were more effective.
On the other side of the ledger, Whitesel surrendered five hits, struck out four, and walked one. The big problem for Whitesel was that two of the five Shore hits were home runs that scored all of Shore's runs.
With Whitesel and Eiswerth dueling each other through three-and-a-half scoreless innings, Kaiden Brungard gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead when he nailed a solo shot over the fence in right-center field.
"I knew he was throwing a lot of junk on the first pitch and he got down in the count (2-1) so I sat on a fastball and was able to drive it," said Brungard. "I knew I hit it well, but I didn't know it was out until the kid (Devin Hendrix) just stood there and watched it."
With the Whitesel-Eiswerth duel continuing into the sixth inning, Zach Miller gave the Bulldogs a little breathing room when he hit a two-run shot into the parking lot beyond the rightfield fence.
