Members of the Williamsport Bureau of Fire have released updates on two residential fires that took place early Tuesday morning in the city.
The first blaze began at about 1 a.m. in a freestanding garage at 2899 S. Reach Road.
Though firefighters spent about an hour putting out the flames, they were unable to save the garage, which burned to the ground. According to fire Chief C. Dean Heinbach, the fire caused an estimated $75,000 worth of damage.
"We've determined the cause to be accidental. We believe some cleaning rags caught fire and started it," Heinbach said.
City firefighters responded to a second structure fire at about 5 a.m. in the Newberry section. This time, flames engulfed a garage and part of a home at 2750 Newberry St.
Three people lived in the residence, but only two were home at the time. Both managed to escape unharmed, according to fire officials.
Investigators still are determining the cause of the fire, which ate through the west side of the house, the breezeway and the garage.
