May is Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease Awareness Month. ALS is a disorder that affects the function of nerves and muscles. 5,600 people are diagnosed each. Signs and Symptoms are muscle weakness in one or more of the following : hands , arms, legs, muscles of speech, swallowing and breathing, twitching and cramping in arms and legs, "thick speech" and difficulty in projecting the voice, the advanced stages are shortness of breath, and difficulty in breathing and swallowing. The forms of ALS are sporadic - the most common form and 90 to 95% of the people get this type of form, and familial - occurring more than once in the family lineage 5-10%. 60% are men and 93% are Caucasian who catch ALS. 50% of people who catch ALS live between three or more years, 20% will live five or more years and 10% will live more than ten years.
