Sarah Faber "Sally" Vargo, 93, died on May 29, 2013.
Sally was born in Beech Creek, Clinton County. She grew up in the Harrisburg area and was a 1937 graduate of Camp Hill High School.
She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, received her bachelor's degree from the Pennsylvania State University and her master's degree from Bucknell University.
Prior to the start of World War II, Sally taught school at Camp Hill High School and married a Penn State football player, Tom Vargo, in the summer of 1942. After Tom entered the Navy, Sally decided to join the Navy and went to Navy Wave Officer Candidate School in Northampton, Mass., and was commissioned as an Ensign.
She was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia and was promoted to Lieutenant J.G. prior to her discharge from the Navy.
Sally was bitten by the "travel bug" at an early age. Her father would take the family on numerous "road trips" to Gettysburg, Williamsport and World's Fairs. In the 20s and 30s, going for an automobile ride was a real adventure.
Being a physical education instructor at Lycoming College (in the 50s) she had the summers off and would plan yearly month long automobile trips to visit the U.S. and National Parks with her family.
One of her trips took Sally to New York City where she earned her 15 minutes of fame; she became a contestant on the Price-is-Right TV show. Her real passion in life was travel which included planning and guiding trips. In her later years she worked for Edwards Trailways and Continental Trailways as a tour guide and AAA planning and guiding their tours.
Sally's personal travels have taken her to places like Moscow's Red Square, Alaska's Denali National Park, Norway, Denmark, Singapore, the jungles of Malaysia and to be with elephants in Thailand.
In addition to her parents, Sally was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Tom Vargo, and a sister, Katherine Faber Christie.
She is survived by her son, Tom Vargo, Jr. and his wife, Mary Ann of Newport; grandsons, Tom Vargo III and Brian Vargo (Jennifer) of Trout Run; and three great grandchildren, Logan, Bryn and Kylee.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sally's honor to the Lycoming County SPCA, 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701.
Arrangements are being handled by Spitler Funeral Home, Montoursville.
