T. Ernest Johns Jr., of Laurelwood Care Center, formerly of Benshoff Hill, passed away Friday, May 31, 2013, at the center.
He was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Johnstown, son of the late Thelbert Ernest Sr. and Vivian "June" (Chute) Johns. Survived by wife of 57 years, the former Lois (Harrison) Johns and these daughters: Nannette (Jerry) Zapola, Williamsport, Janice (Jim) Demchak, Mundys Corner, Sandy (Joe) Hurtack, East Berlin, Suzie (Greg) Shaffer, Revloc, and Jill (Ed) Robbins, Williamsport. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Sarah (Murray) Shultz, of South Carolina, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He served in the Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. Retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp as a bricklayer, Ernie was always doing jobs for family and friends, sharing his talents when he could. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren where he served as a deacon, he was also actively involved in New Day Ministries and Camp Harmony. He was an avid bowler and liked to speak of his days growing up in Ebensburg. He was a former Boy Scout and member of the former Cambria Cadets Sr. Drum and Bugle Corp.
Friends were received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Askew-Houser Funeral Homes, Inc., Ebensburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, Pastor Phillip King, officiating.
Interment will be at Benshoff Hill Cemetery. Military Rites by Menoher Post No. 155 VFW Ritual Team.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren Memorial Fund or to the Jackson Township Ambulance Association.
