Landlord charged in dispute with
his former tenant
A landlord faces criminal charges for allegedly breaking into his tenant's living quarters and stealing 77 of her personal items, which he set on fire outside the house, state police said.
Keith Herbert Chambers, 65, of 1523 Bloomingrove Road, has been charged with burglary, criminal mischief and theft as a result of burning possessions belonging to Christina Killinger, who, at the time, rented a property from him at 1531 Bloomingrove Road, police said.
Police allege Chambers broke into the property and stole Killinger's possessions last July 2. He told police he did it because Killinger "was to be out of the house by July 1," according to court records.
Days earlier, there was a landlord-tenant eviction hearing involving Chambers and Killinger before District Judge Gary A. Whiteman. Chambers was attempting to have Killinger evicted, but at the end of the hearing, Whiteman ruled in Killinger's favor, rejecting Chambers' petition for an eviction.
Police said Killinger suffered a $12,113 loss as result of Chambers allegedly setting fire to her belongings.
Following his recent arraignment on the criminal charges, Chambers initially was committed to the Lycoming County Prison, but since has been released on $35,000 bail.
