When Dr. Kathleen Kelley, Williamsport Area School District superintendent, retires at the end of the week from her $160,000 a year job, she will leave with a retirement package that includes a bonus for years served in the district, as well as health insurance and payments for unused time off.
In addition to her pension, Kelley's contract approved in an 8-0 vote by the school board when she was hired on July 11, 2006, includes a bonus for years served in the district. That bonus is about $20,000 and is based on a formula that multiplies Kelley's per diem rate of about $650 by the product of 4.5 times her seven years of service.
Kelley supplied the information to the Sun-Gazette after the newspaper filed a formal Right to Know request with the district.
Kelley's contract allows her to receive reimbursement for 25 days of unused vacation time. She will receive $250 for each day, for a total of $6,250. She also will receive $40,000 for unused sick days. Kelley said she has more than 400 unused sick days but the contract states that it will only reimburse $200 for any unused sick day up to a maximum of 200 days.
Kelley will receive health insurance for the next three years from PSERs contributions and her own contribution of $100 per month. She also must apply for medicare when eligible.
She also may receive up to $1,000 for moving expenses back to Latrobe and must submit receipts for reimbursement, according to her contract. Kelley said she will stay in the area for a little while but eventually plans to move back to western Pennsylvania.
During the first year of her employment with the district, Kelley's salary was set by the school board at $135,000 a year. This past school year, her salary was $160,952.
