Apparently many people have misunderstood the point of my recent letter. It is about seeing these kids as special and including them in these Rights of Passage with other kids. Being a special ed teacher myself, these kids such as Andrew remind us that their smiles are priceless.
The whole idea here was to not accept limitations that are stated about these kids. In my years of being in the profession of special education, far too many times, I have seen people accept a diagnosis and lose track of the child. In reading responses, it is obvious this child has many supportive people loving and caring for him despite of the diagnosis, not because of it.
