Get more involved

June 30, 2013
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

I genuinely believe with the current state of the city, we as citizens of Williamsport have to get more involved. More involved in things such as Neighborhood Crime Watch, more involved in helping to clean up the parks, and even more involved with our neighbors. Often I see or hear about neighbors contacting codes in regards to a neighboring property and there are times where I can understand this but at the same time, there are times where perhaps you should just walk on over and knock on their door and discuss your concerns with the home owner first. Perhaps if you got to know the neighbors you'd feel a little safer and a little more comfortable with your surroundings. I truly believe we also need to be much more involved with the children throughout our community. The first step is responsible parenting, manners, morals, respect, & education. A child being taught and steered in the right direction is the first step. Second is encouraging kids to be involved in their community, but it's not as simple as just saying 'here's a broom, do this'; we have to lead by example, stand up next to them and help within our community. We also need the support of individuals like Mayor Gabriel Campana. It is not the responsibility of the local government to act as the parents of our children it is ours.
