William G. Holland Jr., 88, of 204 Oak Lane, Flemington, died Friday, June 28, 2013, at the Susqueview Nursing Home.
He was born Oct. 13, 1924, in Lock Haven the son of the late William G. and Florence Davies Holland. He was married for 40 years to the former Gertrude Heverly who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, the former Ann Crowley.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1943 through 1946 stationed in the South Pacific. Bill was a 1942 graduate of Lock Haven High School. He was a graduate of Lock Haven Teachers College, and received his master's degree in education from Penn State University. While attending college he was employed by the Paper Mill.
He was employed as a math teacher at Bradford, Howard, and Bald Eagle Area Schools. In 1957, he was employed by Yellowstone National Park as a Park Ranger. In 1959, he was hired as a math teacher at Lock Haven High School where he later became principal of the high school for 24 years, retiring in 1987.
He was actively involved with the PIAA serving on the Board of Control for 15 years, vice president for five years and president for five years and was instrumental in making numerous progressive changes to the association. He also served as chairman of District VI and was the recipient of the District VI Man of the Year award. He was actively involved with the District, Regional, and State Wrestling Tournament where he helped implement many changes in the PA State Wrestling format. Bill was inducted into the Clinton County Sports Hall of Fame, the District VI Sports Hall of Fame, and the PA Wrestling Hall of Fame.
He was a member of the Great Island Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Trout Unlimited, Masonic Lodge, Lion's Club, and Kiwanis Club. Bill was an avid Penn State fan and season ticket holder and traveled to numerous bowl games. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home throughout the United States and Canada.
In addition to his wife, Ann, he is survived by two sons, Willaim G., III (Brenda), of Canton, Joel F., of Lock Haven; two daughters, Mellissa M. Boyle (Steve), of Flemington, Krista M. Wright (Steve), of Horseheads, N.Y.; one step-son, Greg Crowley (Delly), of Valparaiso, Ind.; one step-daughter, Ruth Ann Crowley (David), of Framingham, Mass.; two brothers, Jack Holland, of West Seneca, N.Y., Donald Holland, of Geneseo, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and two close friends, Tom Elling and Bill Bailey Sr.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High Street, Flemington, with the Rev. Mark Riley officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Lock Haven.
