Growing up on a dairy farm I learned that it is more important to give things than it is to receive things. I love volunteering in the community and also serving as this years Sun Area Dairy Princess. I wanted to be princess because I like doing volunteer work and also wanted to represent the dairy farmers at different events.
Last month I went on a mission trip to Staten Island, N.Y., to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. There were 40 youth and adults on the mission trip. We split into three groups; my group tore down a deck and built a patio. Because I drink milk and eat a variety of dairy products, I was able to lift heavy equipment and keep working without losing energy. My favorite part about the mission trip was building the patio and eating tasty, delicious vanilla ice cream.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as national ice cream month, and also the third Sunday of July as national ice cream day. He recognized ice cream as a nutritious food that is enjoyed by 90 percent of the nation's population. About nine percent of all milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream. Since July is ice cream month, I challenge readers to eat lots of tasty, delicious ice cream. Here are some recipes.
Frosty apple health drink
1 gallon fresh cold milk
1 12 ounce can apple concentrate
1to 1/2 quart vanilla ice cream, softened
Nutmeg (if desired)
Put all ingredients together in a large bowl and beat until frothy. Pour into a chilled punch bowl. Add cinnamon and nutmeg to taste. This serves 25.
My mom is not a very good cook. We always tell her that she uses the smoke alarm as her timer. But what she is good at is making is homemade cheese cake ice cream.
Cheese cake ice cream
4 1/2 cup milk
2 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 cans carnation milk
3 table spoons vanilla
Powder from instant cheesecake mix.
Mix everything in a bowl and then put it in the ice cream maker. Enjoy!
