SUNBURY - The Hotel Edison will be host the sixth annual Bill Hoover Memorial Quizzo Tournament at 8 p.m. on July 15.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the William Hoover Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards Shikellamy seniors with a monetary scholarship to assist with college.
This year three scholarships were awarded to Shikellamy seniors. In the past five years, 11 students have been awarded the monetary scholarship. In addition, a portion of this year's proceeds will be donated to the Shikellamy Outdoor Education "Save 5th Grade Camp" Fund. Hoover taught fifth grade for many years and chaperoned the annual event. Hoover passed away in February 2008 after a battle with cancer.
Hoover was born in Sunbury in 1947, and was raised in the Odd Fellows Orphanage in Sunbury from 1951 to 1965.
He taught fifth grade at Steel and CW Rice Elementary Schools in Northumberland. Later he taught both fourth and fifth grade at Edison Elementary and Chief Shikellamy Schools.
He retired from education in 2004 after 33 years of service with the Shikellamy School District. He touched the lives of thousands of students throughout his career. He was a lifelong Sunbury resident and loved the city.
Last year's Quizzo Tournament raised more than $3,500 for the scholarship fund and more than 200 people attended the event.
