Red Wetherbee departed this life on July 9, 2013, in Wellsboro, Pa. He and his twin brother, Wilbur, were born to Hugh Raymond and Ruth Eleanor (Marmor) Wetherbee in Wellsboro on Jan. 14, 1922. He was the oldest and last surviving of their six boys, (also including: Kenneth, Elbert, Llewellyn, and Gordon). He was also half brother to his father's older son, Walter.
Arlene Flossie Putman and Red were married in Wellsboro Feb. 15, 1942. They had two children, W. Karl Jr., of Warrington, Pa., and Dawn Marie of Clifton Park, N.Y.
Red proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-29 Superfortress Crew Chief and was part of the 504th Bomb Group stationed on Tinian Island. "Stork Club Boys," "Spirit of FDR" and "Lucky Lady" were among the B-29s Red serviced. His dress uniform is among the artifacts with the permanent B-29 exhibit at the New England Air Museum, Windsor Locks, Conn.
Red graduated from Wellsboro High School with the Class of 1939. He was known throughout the Tioga County area as a general store keeper, appliance salesman, and expert appliance repairman. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Ossea Masonic Lodge No. 317 since 1957. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Wellsboro.
Red started caddying and playing golf in 1934 and became a member of the Tyoga Country Club about 1957. He was an accomplished golfer with three holes-in-one to his credit, the most recent occurring in his 70s. When younger, he also enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing.
Arlene and Red were original owners at Eagle's Nest Beach Resort, Marco Island, Fla., where he enjoyed staying every February. Failing health prevented him from returning there this year.
Red is survived by his son, daughter, and their spouses: Lana Wetherbee and John Guinan, respectively; grandchildren: Scott Wetherbee, Tiffani Shovlin, Noelle Steed, and Chad Wetherbee; and eight great-grandchildren. He will rest in peace beside his beloved Arlene at West Branch Cemetery.

Funeral Saturday, July 13, 2013, 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Scott Wetherbee officiating. Burial at West Branch Cemetery, with full military honors.
