"Watch out for that girl. She may one day change the world."
I can't believe I'm quoting a boy band, but those words stop me in my tracks. They remind me of the modern-day women who power through barriers, stereotypes and obstacles to change the world and make the community a stronger and better place for us and for future generations.
At the YWCA Northcentral Pennsylvania, we call these ladies Women of Excellence. This year marks our fifth anniversary of celebrating the female movers and shakers who inspire us all while devoting their own blood, sweat and tears to unique and varied causes.
Women of Excellence can be credited for some of the most successful businesses and organizations in Lycoming County. They have formed arts and humanitarian organizations, guided industries to succeed and have taught, nursed, nurtured, loved, cared for and given countless selfless hours to others.
They are nominated by local service groups, nonprofits, employers and citizens and it is the friends and admirers of these women who recognize their leadership and dedication. Deep respect and love is evident in the Women of Excellence nomination forms we receive each year.
After nominations are received, we then give these women the recognition they deserve. We carve out one evening each fall to let them know their selflessness has not gone unnoticed. Nominators and the public gather together to say, "We are thankful for you. You are appreciated. We couldn't have done it without you."
It has been a gift for the YWCA to recognize the strong, dedicated women whose paths would not normally intersect with ours, and we look forward to continuing our annual tribute to Women of Excellence into the future.
If you would like to tell the YWCA about a Woman of Excellence in your life, nominations are now open. You can find more information and the form on our website at www.ywcawilliamsport.org.
